Blogger Recognition Awards 2018

Last week, we were the surprise recipients of a nomination for the Blogger Recognition Award 2018, by the wonderful Brian and Chelsea from Two of a Mind. Having only two podcast episodes at the time and little content on this website, the nomination came out of the blue and we were honoured to be a part of the list.

So, a big thank you to Brian and Chelsea!

The rules for accepting the award are:

  • Thank the blogger that nominated you
  • Write a post to show your award
  • Give a brief story of how your blog began
  • Give two pieces of advice to new bloggers
  • Select 15 other bloggers you want to give this award to
  • Comment on each blog and let them know you’ve nominated them, and provide the link to the post you’ve created.

How From Long Distance to Marriage began

We won’t go into detail of our story here, as we’ve got both a post and a podcast episode already dedicated to that, so we will focus on how the website and podcast came to be.

There isn’t really a big juicy story behind it. We are both creative people who enjoy writing and, well, creating things. We had discussed the idea of doing a podcast for a little while but we didn’t know what the topic would be. Then, in 2018, we went away for a week to a friend’s wedding and spent a few days revisiting the area where we had our honeymoon. As fate would have it, the other guests in our AirBnB had been a long distance couple – and, just like us, they were from the UK and the USA.

This planted a seed in Rich’s head. Technology has made the world a small place and we are seeing more long distance relationships. While walking our dogs one weekend, we discussed the fact we were noticing more people in long distance relationships, and that this could make a good podcast. It was something we had been through, and we had learned a lot along the way. We certainly would have appreciated some advice from people who had made it, so we thought “Why don’t we become those people for the couples going through LDR now?”

And that, in a nutshell, was how it began.

Then came the task of choosing a name – which, for once, was quite easy. Then our social media handles (LongDistancetoMarriage being far too long), which we decided should be Mr and Mrs Distance. Again, too long, so we went with MrMrsDistance for Instragram and Mr_Mrs_Distance for Twitter.

Advice to new bloggers

  • Post regularly. It doesn’t have to be every day, but regular content will let people know it’s worth returning to your site.
  • Get engaged with the community. Whatever your niche, there will be other people in it. These are people who may have been through the same thing you have, or who you could help or be helped by.
  • Don’t think you need to be on every single platform. Pick a social media site (or sites) that you can do a good job on, instead of trying to do all of them.
  • Don’t expect to be a runaway hit and be able to live in the Bahamas after six months. Do it because you want to do it and enjoy the process.

Nominations

As we are still new to this we unfortunately don’t have 15 blogs to nominate. Our first nomination is, naturally, to Brian and Chelsea who nominated us. The rest of our list is people we have connected with on social media and we think deserve some recognition.
